Resolution 0513: New Specs for GATEWAY Ship

RES 0513
Submitted by: Sarah Albertini-Bond & Steve Peterson

The follow are specs for a new ship for the GATEWAY, which the CEO of the Fleet has looked over and has approved. We feel that the new ship would reflect the new GS-2 complex and our merging diplomacy/politics with the merging of different technologies.

BACKGROUND:
After the Dominion War, the breakup of the Klingon Empire, ongoing conflicts with the Cardassian Union and the Romulan Star Empire and Borg having joined the Federation itself, Starfleet made the strategic decision in 2407 to develop a class of small but heavily-armed corvettes to act as a tripwire along remote borders until a fleet could respond. The Advanced Starship Design Bureau (ASDB) was tasked with developing this new corvette class. After the remnants of the Klingon Alliance sided with the Federation in 2409, the Federation Council directed the ASDB to work in conjunction with the Imperial Fleet Planning Agency (IFPA) to develop a joint Federation-Klingon vessel to be used along common frontiers. Together, the ASDB/IFPA Panel decided on a common mix of technologies and independent technologies from each power to use in the vessel.

Furthermore, in 2411, Starfleet Command, concerned about the one-year old Transwarp drives and their reliability, ordered that the prototype vessel, the USS STARBLAZER, be equipped with an experimental slipstream drive based on research following off of one starship's experience in the Delta Quadrant in the 2370s. Due to this new feature, the class was designated SX, because of the new engine, in a tip of the cap to Starfleet history. The design was approved by the Federation/Klingon Joint Design Board (FKJDB) in 2413. After the prototype was built in 2414, the Romulans and Vulcans withdrew from the Federation and began their war against the UFP, and relations with the Borg went sour, Starfleet mothballed the project in order to concentrate on proven technologies and the Klingon's withdrew to concentrate on the reorganization of the newly reunited Klingon Empire.

Now, short on vessels, Starfleet has pulled the USS STARBLAZER out of mothballs and commissioned it as a support vessel in the Gamma Quadrant.

TECHNOLOGY NOTES:
Experimental Slipstream Drive, Mark I: Based on a design over four-decades old, the slipstream drive enables the vessel to create slipstream tunnels within subspace and go at speeds of an unbelievable rate previously unknown to Starfleet or the Klingon Empire. Slipstream tunnels are sometimes difficult to create and therefore the engines have been known to be touchy. The Slipstream Drive uses mass amounts of power and therefore is dependent upon warp power and power reserves for long usage. It is also not entirely reliable, based on initial tests only actually propelling the vessel into a tunnel 52.7% of the time.

Multi-Dimensional Sublight Impulse Drive: The standard Klingon impulse drive to the very day, this drive is more powerful and provides for a quicker response time than standard Starfleet Omni-Directional Sublight Impulse Drives. It was chosen because the size of an SX-class corvette is smaller and thus the more maneuverability, the better for the vessel. However, there have been issues of interoperability between the Klingon systems and Starfleet systems.

Phaser Cannons, Mark II: Standard Starfleet Phaser Cannons.

Klingon Disruptor Banks, Type XI: Standard Klingon Disruptors, deemed ideal for the SX-class Corvette because of their increased power compared to Starfleet Phaser banks.

Ablative Armor, Mark III: A standard Klingon armor skin was used in the first layer of the hull and coated with Starfleet ablative armor for a second skin. The now standard Bio-Regenerative Hull Matrix was not used because the bio-neural cells interfered with the operability of the slipstream drive and thus Starfleet has had to rely on old standbys.

Tactical Sensor Pack, Mark I: A joint sensor-system designed by Starfleet and Klingon tactical experts to allow for the greatest use of weapons and engines against each foe. The TSP enables quicker response times and better usage of all shipwide defense and offense systems.
