Resolution 0202: 22nd Century RP Unit

PLEASE NOTE: All historical and technical information on this vessel is taken from the Daystrom Institute of Technology, which I think makes the most sense of what little information we have on this class of starship. A link will be provided at the bottom of the proposal.

The idea is for a RP unit set in the mid-22nd Century, shortly after the Human/Romulan Wars. It would be shortly after the year 2161 to start (explained below), slightly after Enterprise NX-01 is flying. Starfleet is still only a few years old. The unit would be a starship of the DAEDALUS class; quite possibly Starfleet's very first exploration craft.

In this time period, virtually all of the universe is unknown beyond the limits of the our solar system. Many Starfleet regulations, most notably the Prime Directive, has not yet come into play. After Earth donated 60 of the fleet of 70 DAEDALUS class vessels to Starfleet in 2161, they became a unique part of history. The DAEDALUS class Starship was the type of vessel that made virtually every exploration mission, every new scientific discovery, and every first
contact within the first eighty years of Starfleet's life. The crews were mainly human, though a few Vulcan's did serve on the vessels.

Though Vulcan and Human are virtually the only choices for a person to make of their character's species, I think that this gives the opportunity to focus more on their characters nationality, home etc, which is sometimes slightly more difficult in an environment of many various species. The fact that the vessels were one of Starfleet's first vessels also allows the person to be slightly more challenged in the factor that there are more limits to technology in working out a problem i.e in a mission with a hostage situation, the crew would not have the immediate possibility to beam them out, due to the fears over the relatively new transporter technology.

So as not to disrupt ACT training of new cadets, and the allocation of these new players to the existing units (starships), the recruiting of crew members would be slightly different. After a player has had a certain amount of experience in the FRPG (a minimum of 1 year, for example), they have the option of creating a secondary character for the DAEDALUS vessel(s) in service, who would go straight onto the vessel.

I think that some main advantages to such a unit would include the following;

* A challenge to players with the limits of available technology (see as stated above),
* A possibility of a new position onboard starships - that of a translator officer (nearly all alien languages were unknown.)
* A challenge to simulate that time-period with the information available (far be it from me to criticise the latest, and excellent series of Star Trek, however I believe the FRPG could do a better job at pioneer space travelling. :-)
* Possible educational value to what life may have been like for the early crews,
* A sense of pioneering - virtually all of the races we know of in TNG, and even in TOS of Star Trek, are unknown to Starfleet. Nearly every mission would be a new discovery or first contact.

Concerning the last point, if fears arise that 'meddling' with this point in time in relation to the discoveries made, perhaps accommodation could be made for this unit to be set in an alternate universe nearly exact to our own. This would give the players more leeway when it comes to the discoveries of what, and when, so to speak.

For the specifications of the DAEDALUS class vessel, please go to this site (www.ditl.org), The Daystrom Institue site mentioned earlier. Then select Fed. Ships on the top selection bar, and then DAEDALUS on the left hand menu.

Outcome: Failed/Closed

Notes: The main concern with this resolution is how crew would be transferred to and from this ship, mainly new players. Additionally the impact any events happening on this ship and how they would effect the RPG's history and previous missions.
